Jeffree Star Cosmetics Blue Blood Palette Review

Brand new product review for you. So as soon as this palette was announced, I knew that I needed to own it. I love blue eyeshadows and needed to increase my collection of them. Naturally the palette sold out in something like 5 minutes so I’m super glad I managed to get my hands on it. Looking at the JSC instagram page, this will be restocked next month.

I purchased mine from Beauty Bay (see here) for £48 but you can also get this from the Jeffree Star Cosmetics website (see here) for $52. Psst I’d sign up to email notifications while you are on the Beauty Bay website if I was you. With Beauty Bay, delivery is free on orders over £15 and it arrived by Monday (ordered Friday at 6pm). As always, the palette was well protected during transit.

The Blue Blood palette is the older icy sister to the Blood Sugar palette so I expected opulence…(you own everything, sorry couldn’t resist). It definitely delivered on those expectations. The palette comes in an outer box patterned with wood grain with a matte finish. Honestly the outer box feels soo nice, I kind of wish this was the actual palette. The company logo and palette name are written on the top in raised letters. All product information can be found on the back of this outer box.

The palette itself seems to be made of plastic (not 100% sure) but it does detract from the extravagance you get with Blood Sugar (faux leather case). However, the case is still well made and sturdy. I absolutely love the design of the palette; kind of a cross between a jewellry box and a coffin with the name written on the top. It’s also got a clasp on the front to keep it closed and has a massive mirror on the inner lid.

The Blue Blood palette contains 18 shades: 12 are matte and 6 metallic. For me, there is a fabulous range of shades in this one including a couple of transition shades. There’s a good mix of blues and turquoises, both light and dark shades, within the palette with two of the metallics containing glitter reflects. I’m not a huge fan of the layout of colours but I can see why JS wanted to change it up a little. There is a lot of kickback in the pans for most of the blue shades due to the formula and there is fallout under the eye for the darker shades such as cremated, power and undertaker.

All of the shadows, are extremely pigmented and the mattes are easily blendable and buildable to create bright looks. The metallic shades are pretty awesome (apart from one-see below) and offer good coverage while maintaining their shine. This is fairly typical of all Jeffree Star eyeshadow palettes. Surprisingly, you can use a brush with the metallic shades and still get good pigment. I still use my finger though.

Now to be totally honest. I really do love JSC products and this one is no different however there are a few issues for me. My biggest issue is with the shade Ocean Ice. For some reason this really irritates my eye when it is on the lid. Now I’ve worn actual glitter on my eyes that hasn’t irritated them so it’s something in this shade that’s causing it. It also stains the eye a bright pink (I don’t know why, see image below) and can be difficult to get it to stick to the lid. You need quite a sticky base for Ocean Ice to stay on your eyes. I’ve also found Blue Monday to be quite patchy unless you pack it on before blending.

When doing the swatches, some of the lighter shades did need a double swipe in order to see them properly. On the eye, these really do make for good transition shades as they don’t affect the other colours but offer an easy way to blend them out. You can see in the swatches that Blue Monday is patchy as well. The metallic shades swatched like a dream, so smooth and even.

As with all palette’s I have some shades that I love more than others. Ocean Ice was the shade that really attracted me to this palette but yeah not anymore. Out of the matte shades, I really love flourishing, power and blue blood. These shades have so much pigment and blend out really easily. From the metallic shades, my favourite has got to be entitled but I also really like cullinan and crystal flesh.

Overall, I am reasonably happy with the Blue Blood palette despite its issues. The packaging is well made and sturdy and I love the design of it. I also love the mix of shades you get in this palette including the transition shades. All the shadows have good pigment and blend well. The metallic shades have good shine and can be applied with a brush which isn’t usually the case. Ocean Ice and Blue Monday have some issues but I will still use Blue Monday. Unfortunately, I cannot use Ocean Ice which is such a shame.
