Hi lovelies,
We have another large yet affordable palette for you today and of course it’s from Beauty Bay.

The Midnight 42 colour palette is available to purchase from the Beauty Bay website (see here) and retails for £25. The Midnight palette is also available in a 9 pan (here) and 16 pan (here) option as well. You qualify for free UK shipping on orders over £25 and it will be with you in a couple of days.

The packaging is pretty typical for a Beauty Bay branded palette. There’s the standard matte, black outer box with the satin black design and white text. All product information including the ingredients can be found on the back of the box and the palette. The palette itself is coloured to match the inside and as always contains a huge mirror on the inside of the lid. The lid is held closed using magnets and there’s a protective sheet covering the pans.

This is a 42 pan palette that contains 25 matte shades and 17 shimmer shades. It is inspired by the limited edition Book of Magic palette with a colour story full of purples and blues. There’s pretty much an even split between the two colours and each have a range of tones for creating gradient blends. The pans are a good size and the shade names are written underneath.

When doing the swatches, the shadows felt soft and smooth to the touch. Most of the shadows swiped evenly with good pigment though some of the lighter shades did need 2 layers to really show up. A couple of the darker blues needed a few layers to get that pigment to swipe fully. The shimmers felt buttery and swiped with complete ease.

On the eye, the shadows are a little bit strange. All are highly pigmented and most are easy to work with. I say most…a couple of the darker shades are a bit harder to blend then their lighter counterparts so our advice would be to build and blend those particular shades gradually instead of packing them on. Another thing to watch out for, again with the darker shades, some of them can become patchy depending how you layer them up. It’s quite odd as when used alone or first they’re fine.
The shimmers are also a little odd. Some of the really glittery shades start to clump together when you pick them up on a brush. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still soft and buttery but the clumping makes them awkward to apply. You’ve really got to work to smooth them out and they can produce a lot of fallout under the eye. However, they do last for many hours before they start to crease so swings and roundabouts.

There is some kickback in the pan for all the shades but there’s very little fallout apart from the shimmers and the darker shades. There is some staining to the skin from a couple of the purples as well as the blue shimmers. It can be quite intense at first depending how long you’ve had the shadows on but it goes within a day and can be reduced by oil.

Overall, I have to admit, it’s not the best palette from Beauty Bay however I do appreciate that purples and blues are some of the hardest eyeshadows to create. There are a few issues with this one but not necessarily things that make the palette unworkable. More like, gives you some extra hurdles to work through. For the most part, the shadows are easy to blend and look good. All are highly pigmented and the shimmers have plenty of shine.
