The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum Review

Hi lovelies,

I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Ordinary and their products so I finally decided to give them a go. Not going to lie-their cheap prices have put me off in the past as I don’t skimp on skincare however these are a staple in most pro MUA kits so I figured why not.

The Ordinary Niacinamide and Zinc Serum is available to purchase from the company website (see here) as well as from Beauty Bay (here), Boots (here), Cult Beauty (here) and Look Fantastic (here). The serum is available in 2 sizes: 30ml and 60ml retailing for £5 and £9 respectively. You qualify for free UK delivery on orders over £25 with all the retailers above. I’m not sure about shipping times from the Ordinary as I’ve never shopped direct but your order will be with you in a week from the other retailers.

The packaging is everything you’d expect from a skincare product. There’s an outer box that contains all product information including the ingredients and directions of use. The serum comes in a glass bottle that has an eye dropper to dispense it. Absolutely love the packaging. Everything looks sleek and feels high quality. The bottle is well made, sturdy and secure while the dropper keeps things sanitary and helps to control the amount of serum used.

According to the product description, this is a potent, water based serum that improves skin brightness and smoothness while reinforcing the skin barrier over time. It’s a lightweight serum that regulates sebum production that help reduce breakouts. The niacinamide helps to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, even out skin tone, boosts skin immunity and improves hydration retention. Not too shabby. Zinc encourages healing in damaged skin and the production of collagen and elastin. The website also advises you not to use with direct or indirect Vitamin (Ascorbic Acid and Ascorbyl). This serum is cruelty free and vegan as well as being free from alcohol, oil and silicone. It is suitable for all skin types.

The formula has a thin consistency that is easy to dispense and apply to the skin. You don’t need more than a drop or two for the entire face and neck. It doesn’t have any added fragrance and feels lightweight on the skin. Although it absorbs into the skin quickly, it initially leaves a slight tackiness behind that disappears within a few minutes. After that, you’re left with a soft, smooth finish to the skin. I’ve been testing this out for a couple of weeks now to get a long term feel for it and it’s actually pretty potent. So I started by following the directions of use, applying in the morning and evening as part of my skincare routine but it did cause some purging. Basically I got some breakouts. Looking online, this can be fairly common and the company recommend using a few days a week to build up the skin tolerance. Since then, I’ve had no breakouts but some under surface spots did come to a head then cleared up.

Honestly, it’s only been a few weeks but I’m already seeing an improvement in my skin. A lot of under surface blemishes are slowly disappearing, most surface blemishes are gone or nearly gone and my pores appear much smaller. I’ve not noticed a huge difference in skin tone to be honest, it’s still looks as uneven as ever but my skin does appear brighter and more hydrated. It’s also less oily and shiny. I swear, my skin has never looked so good.

Overall, I am so happy with this purchase of the 10% Niacinamide and Zinc Serum from The Ordinary. The packaging looks sleek and is more than adequate for transporting the serum securely in your kit. It also has the perfect applicator too. It absorbs into the skin quickly leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. With consistent use, it improves skin texture, blemishes, dullness and helps control oil too.
